Stereotypes&Myths: The "Evil Alter"

May 10, 2022

Both ignorance, and assumptions, have led to many of the stereotypes and myths surrounding Systems. Not only has this condition suffered from a lack of research and information, the assumptions made in that ignorance has lead to the harmful media representations. With such negative media representation the existence of a social stigma isn't surprising. The public, and often personal, scrutiny that systems face can be an absolutely destructive force. In order to end the stigma society has to stop percieving systems as detrimentally different from their own existence.

Not ALL of us are evil

One of the most common sterotypes that Systems struggle with is the misconception that all systems have an "Evil Alter". Media representations like "Split", have created a belief amongst the public that systems are dangerous. And while the system that the movie was based on absolutely committed atrocious acts, making the assumption that all systems are the same is incorrect. While a system could absolutely have an alter that could be dangerous, not every system will (Most systems will not). The only difference between systems and non-systems is the presence of dissociative compartmentalization. Since alters are the expression of pinpoints of identity- if a system has a part that is truly dangerous, or Evil, that part would exist within that human being regardless of systemhood. Whether a person is a threat to society cannot be determined by the existence of dissociation in a brain.

Rarely hurting, often hurt again & again

The reality is that many systems are victims of intense, repeated trauma. Victims of such abuses are statistically less likely to be a threat to others. Because of the pain they endured at the hands of others, they are less likely to want to cause that pain in others. Victims are actually at a increased risk of repeated abusive relationships, and situations. The truth of the situation is that a large majority of systems, just like non-systems, are mostly non-threatening to society.
