Prosocial Spending

It means spending money on other people and it is proven to boost happiness.

In one experiment, 46 students were given $20.00 to spend. The ones who were told to spend the money on others were happier at the end of the day than the ones who had been instructed to spend the money on themselves.

It is so much fun to do this.  Before I retired I used to work at a community college in Eureka, CA.  Every work day on my morning break I used to buy a large size of tater tots - think of shredded potatoes that are processed as 1/2 X 1 inch round deep fried potato treats.  On my way back to my office I would eat 2 of these treats, caw like a crow until they came to where I was, and give the rest of the treats to the birds. That was such a joy.  I also had a plot with one of the cahiers where, towards the end of month give her a $20 bill and say "Let it Ride" and she would pay all the people behind me until the money ran out.  Fun, Fun, Fun.

I love this John!  Especially the cashier part.  I have often paid for the person behind me at a drive-through and then I speed away so they have no opportunity to thank me.  It's much more fun thinking that maybe I started a kindness chain that would continue long after I've driven off.
