Two peacocks with tails spread wide, a sacred bull resting at the front, and an entire Hindu family carved in stone sitting above all of it — this is one of the quieter corners of Penang Hill.
This statue group sits on the temple grounds near the summit of Penang Hill, Malaysia, depicting Lord Shiva seated at the center with his family: Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, on one side, Parvati and their son Murugan on the other, all seated together on an ornately painted platform. In front of them, Nandi the sacred bull reclines facing the group, flanked by two peacocks in full plumage, their tails curling out toward the edges of the frame. This kind of layered devotional statuary is common at Hindu temple sites across Malaysia, and finding one tucked into the greenery near the top of Penang Hill, surrounded by banana leaves and oleander flowers, makes it feel more like a quiet shrine than a tourist stop.
What pulled me toward this shot was the framing nature gave me for free — dense green foliage on both sides acting almost like a natural doorway around the statues, with just enough overcast sky above to keep the colors of the sculptures the main focus.
Here's why I set the camera the way I did. f/8 gave enough depth of field to hold the entire statue group sharp, from Nandi in the foreground to Shiva's family on the platform above. 1/100 sec was more than enough for a completely static scene. Overcast light kept ISO at 160, still clean with minimal noise. 24mm on the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II let me capture the full statue group along with the surrounding greenery in one wide, immersive frame.
