Two Boats Tied Together, Laundry on the Line, a Propeller the Size of a Dining Table — This Is Home on the Mekong
Two weathered working houseboats moored side by side on the Song Can Tho river near Cai Rang — blue tarpaulin stretched over the roof of the left hull, laundry hanging from every available rail and rope, clothing in every colour drying in the open air. A massive exposed red propeller shaft sitting between the two vessels. A man crouching at the stern of the right boat, working on something in a bucket, his back to the camera. A potted plant on the left deck. Blue water barrels. Tyres for fenders. Everything a river family needs, distributed across two hulls that have been tied together for as long as anyone can remember.
I shot this at 62mm on the Sony Alpha 7 IV with the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II from a small boat moving through the Cai Rang market traffic. f/8.0 to keep both hulls and everything on deck sharp from the propeller in the foreground to the man at the far stern. 1/2000 — fast enough to freeze the scene completely despite shooting from a moving vessel on a choppy river. ISO 1000 in the open midday light, clean files with full detail in the shadow areas under the tarpaulin.

Cai Rang Floating Market sits on the Song Can Tho and Song Hau rivers near Can Tho, the second-largest city in southern Vietnam. The market runs from before dawn and the main trading is done by 8am. But the houseboats are there all day — moored in clusters along the banks, at anchor in the wider channels, or moving slowly between stops. These are not heritage attractions. They are working boats, family homes, and river transport all at once. The families who live on them have been doing so for generations and most have no plans to move onto land.
We left Saigon at 4am to reach Can Tho by dawn. These boats were already moving when we got there.
