A recent pro bono visit was to Serenity Equine Rescue with trusty student and assistant Becky. We were there to collect the prayers of the rescue horses as well as offer energy healing to those who wished to receive. This visit was another leg on our ambitious plans for pro bono work this summer, and it was quite a day! I was exhausted by the end, but left feeling gifted by our interactions with each resident.
The call to ceremony actually came from Spirit placing the book The Horse God Built in front of me. It focuses on racing legend Secretariat from a more personal standpoint as well on his relationship with often historically overlooked groom Eddie Sweat. It has been conjectured that perhaps Secretariat might not have become who he was without Eddie. The book also reveals the racism of the time as well as a scary glimpse into the beginning of the dehumanizing of the horses that race for their owners. That said, I found the book inspirational and heartwarming in many ways, and ironically it was who Secretariat was as an individual and how he made those who watched him run feel that truly called to me to do ceremony.
I reached out to Patricia who founded Serenity Equine Rescue. Not only had she graciously welcomed my students and I in the past, I knew she might have rescued a horse that had fallen on hard times after the track. And it turned out she had rescued two: Eddie and Hulk. We carried the prayers sticks to all the rescue horses (and Kunekune JoJo, Moo the steer, and three goats), but prayers from Eddie and Hulk meant that there would also be a connection to the horses of the racing world, thereby helping to facilitate change when all were brought to fire in ceremony which happened the following evening.
While there, Becky and I also offered healing to those who wished to receive. Becky was often doing double duty, taking video of my healing sessions for use with advanced Animal ReikiShamanic students and also offering Reiki to those who approached her.
