Here are some recent snippets from my weekly review. Each week I look back and record what I’ve been thinking, reading, and experiencing in the classroom and in life. Think, Learn, Share, Repeat.

  • Teachers’ job satisfaction is lower on average than that of other workers in other professions. According to new research, “Majorities of teachers say parents are doing too little when it comes to holding their children accountable if they misbehave in school, helping them with their schoolwork and ensuring their attendance.” Source: Beshay. “What’s It like to Be a Teacher in America Today?” Pew Research Center, Pew Research Center, 4 Apr. 2024, www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2024/04/04/whats-it-like-to-be-a-teacher-in-america-today/. • Meaningful feedback appears to boost student motivation more than grades. While grades can enhance achievement, it’s often at the expense of motivation. *Source: Koenka, A. Educational Psychology, 41(7), 922–947. https://doi.org/10.1080/01443410.2019.1659939*

  • Classical learning seems to be slipping out of public education. Since it’s the foundation of our legal, political, and scientific systems, perhaps we should bring more of it back. • When schools give teachers planning time, it makes life easier and reduces stress. Time is a gift, and more planning time can help make teaching more sustainable.

  • I’ve noticed a calmer and more focused classroom when we take a break from our Chromebooks.

  • “School leaders — both site leaders and central office leaders — must focus on boosting the resilience of staff as a lever for school transformation.” (Elena Aguilar, Onward)

  • In education, we often hang beautiful work on the walls. We must remember to celebrate beautiful ideas, imagination, and curiosity regardless of the end product. The future belongs to those who generate new ideas.

  • Reflection + Action = Evolution

  • Student attention spans have been hijacked.

Here’s what I’ve been up to.
