A few steps past the water wheel, the forest was quiet again. Only raindrops falling onto leaves carried on the gentle rhythm of the lingering shower. I followed the path toward another magical place — a tiny hidden pond full of life.
The trail climbed past ancient Beech trees and thick blackberry bushes; some already had ripe berries, a sweet and unexpected treat. Somewhere in these wild, overgrown meadows lay what I was searching for. In winter, when the grasses lie flat, the pond is easy to spot. But in August, the thick summer growth makes it nearly invisible.
At last, there it was. Barely visible from the path, I pushed through the tall grass until I stood at its edge. How different it all looked in summer. Lush green surrounded me, lifting my spirits despite the drizzle. Dragonflies zipped by, ferns stood tall at the water’s edge, branches reached into the pond, and raindrops sent ripples across the surface, reaching all the way to the shore. It felt like magic — the kind only nature can create.
Determined to capture this hidden scene, I built another makeshift tripod out of nearby branches and set up my camera. I waited quietly as the birds adjusted to my presence — first calling their alarm, then resuming their chatter. A breeze would stir the trees, sending sudden showers of droplets splashing into the pond as if the rain wasn’t finished. Yet moments later, sunlight peeked through the clouds, scattering brightness across the water. Back and forth the forest shifted — between quiet and sound, rain and light. This constant change is what makes it so beautiful.
I said goodbye for now, knowing I’ll return in another season. Perhaps next time the trees will be in their winter slumber, the meadow covered in snow. Each visit brings a new face to this little pond. With every year, the brush around it grows denser, trying to hide it away, but I’ll always find a way back.
