I recorded a narration of this story with quiet desert sounds and gentle music — I'm sharing it freely today. If you'd like to hear more like this, members receive a new narrated story with every video.
The desert is full of life, no matter the season, but when rain passes through this arid land, fragile patches of colorful flowers brighten this landscape as if it were a mountain meadow.

It was my first visit to Anza Borrego. For weeks now, I've followed posts online filled with photos of flowers and vivid descriptions of the beauty that this desert holds, but I wasn't prepared for this, for the vastness of flower fields, the colors of the purple sand verbena in contrast to the white evening primrose, the hazy blue mountain ridge in the background, and glowing golden sky as the sun was setting.
One minute, the delicate flower petals still glowed in the sun; the next, they were bathed in cooler light after the sun finally set behind the mountains. But it wasn't an instant transition; it was as gentle as this landscape as it slowly moved from the golden hour to the blue hour of early evening. It was difficult to step away from it all, but it was increasingly harder to see, and I didn't want to risk accidentally stepping on these fragile flowers.

I spent the night just off the road and got up before dawn to capture the moon setting behind the mountain ridge and the sun rising. The desert awoke again as birds sang and doves called in the distance. The color of the landscape transitioned slowly from a cool blue to a gentle magenta. When the sun finally burst behind the mountain ridge, every single flower petal came alive again. It was a glow that you'll never see at midday, a color so vivid, contrasting against the mountain ridge that was still in deep shadows. Flowers and grass gently swayed in the wind, welcoming the new day.
I noticed one thing that I've never experienced in any flower meadows that I've visited. The scent. It was sweet, humble, and as delicate as these flowers are. One moment it was strong as a breeze carried it across the field, the next it was faint again. To find such a strong, flowery scent in the desert was surprising to me.

Bees buzzed from flower to flower, and so did hummingbirds when I was quick enough to catch a glimpse of them. Oftentimes, I only heard their chittering or screeching as they fiercely protect their territory, but when I did see them, they were like small, colorful jewels flying through the air. When the morning sun caught their feathers just right, they burst in red and green colors. Watching them was as special as the endless flower patches.
A desert full of life.
A desert full of wonder.
