Wellness Check 10/6/2021

Oct 06, 2021

Over the past few years as my life has been a swirling mess of heartbreak and depression I've found myself looking towards spiritual thoughts to try and make sense of horrific things that happen. Like many humans the idea that there's some grand plan or something after this life is appealing as it says there is a purpose to all the crap that happens to us in this life. I wouldn't call myself religious and the ideals and religious thoughts I closest align with are more ancient pagan thoughts then are usually seen today. This is for a variety of reasons but I'm not here to convince you to follow my beliefs because frankly they might not work for you and I don't care if you believe in what I believe.

I would like to invite you to consider your spiritual life and how it effects you. Does it bring you joy? sorrow? peace? discomfort? Does it even matter to you all that much or is it something in the background. I think that for many people there is a level of comfort that comes with having a belief in something bigger than our short lives. If your spiritual beliefs seem to not work out, sometimes it's worth exploring why and finding something that does bring you peace.

What I am interested in though isn't so much the belief that there is some god or gods who are going to save us because I think the evidence shows if there is a supreme being(s) of some type they have very little interest in the going ons of mortals and either don't care about us or expect us to figure our own shit out. Having explored the mythologies and beliefs of several systems, Eastern or Western styles, the one thing that is pretty constant is that humans are expected to strive to improve themselves, to make things happen for themselves. A god might lean you the strength to get through a challenge but you still have to show up and do the job.

So if I had to say I have belief in something, something that can give me hope everyday it is that I believe in humanity. I believe we can improve, we can do better ,that we can strive for the heavens and ascend above our current situations to something better. But we have to do it, all of us together, not as individuals selfishly hording for individual gratification. Humanity has to reach for the stars, not a single human. I want you to believe in yourself as I believe in you, I'd like you to believe in me, and I think together we can fix our world and make something better for the future, just as our ancestors strove to do for us.
