Today I am putting together some new props for my photo sessions this week. Shown here, is the inspiration photo of a costume designed by Oskar Schlemmer in 1923, for what is known as "the Bauhaus ballet," Das Triadisches Ballett.
Since this is my first post, I will explain ... Currently I am in the throes of creating pieces for my solo show, which I will hang on May 6, 2023. The show is entitled "Art Into Industry - a Bauhaus Art Exhibit." Below is my 'blurb' about the show and a few basic points about Bauhaus ideology.
Inspired by Bauhaus, arguably the single most influential modernist art school of the 20th century, this visual work explores Bauhaus concepts through a modern "lens." Here, I explore some of the Bauhaus ideology through collaboration with dancers and models. Using mass-produced products such as plumbing pipe, strings of holiday lights, fiber-optic filament, and plastic rods, I have created shapes for my subjects to interact and dance with. Each person brings their own style and expression to objects of rationalism, breathing life into them with the movement of dance and motion.
I work with dancers regularly in my personal and commercial image-making. Through choreography, dance can be deeply personal, as in a solo performance - or it can be repetitious or robotic. In this series, I am working to combine the uniqueness of the dancer's movement with the simpler - more abstract and rational - shapes that they dance with.
SOooo...today I made a few rings out of plumbing material (Pex) and tomorrow will drill holes in the rings, so I can attach the materials which will hang down like a lampshade. I've also cut the fabric discs and sewn them together, with a hole in the middle.
Not sure if I will be making the 'pants' part of this costume...we are mostly interested in the 'lampshade.'
I'll post progress pics next time ...cheers!
