THE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF.

THE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF.

Nov 24, 2025

They describe common emotional responses people may experience after a loss or major life change. They are not linear, and not everyone experiences all of them. People may move back and forth between stages or feel multiple stages at once.

Here’s a clear, simple breakdown:

1. Denial

“This can’t be happening.”

The mind protects itself by minimizing the shock. Denial helps you pace your feelings so you’re not overwhelmed all at once.

2. Anger

“Why is this happening? Who’s to blame?”

Pain often gets redirected as anger—toward people, the situation, yourself, or even the person you lost. It’s a natural release of intense emotion.

3. Bargaining

“If only I had… Maybe if I do X, things will change.”

People often try to negotiate with a higher power or replay “what if” scenarios, searching for a sense of control.

4. Depression

“This hurts so much. What’s the point?”

Deep sadness sets in as the reality of the loss becomes clear. It can involve withdrawal, crying, or feeling emotionally heavy.

5. Acceptance

“This is what happened, and I’m learning to live with it.”

Acceptance isn’t about being “okay” with the loss; it’s about acknowledging reality and finding a way to move forward.
