Thursday Trail Talk #4 - The Layering System

May 22, 2025

Hello Hiking Enthusiasts, 👋

One of the secrets to comfortable hiking, especially here in the UK where the weather can be unpredictable 🌦️, is understanding the layering system. It's all about wearing multiple layers of clothing that you can add or remove as conditions change. Here's the breakdown:

  • Base Layer: This is the layer closest to your skin. Its main job is to wick away sweat to keep you dry and comfortable. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics like synthetic materials (polyester, nylon) or merino wool. Avoid cotton, as it holds onto moisture and can make you feel cold 🥶.

  • Mid Layer: This layer provides insulation to keep you warm 🔥. Depending on the temperature, this could be a fleece jacket, a down or synthetic insulated jacket, or even a long-sleeved shirt 👕. The goal is to trap air and retain body heat.

  • Outer Layer: This is your protection against the elements – wind 💨 and rain 🌧️. A waterproof and windproof jacket 🧥 is essential. Some outer layers also offer breathability to prevent you from getting too sweaty from the inside.

The beauty of layering is its versatility. If you get warm ☀️, you can take off a layer. If the temperature drops or it starts to rain, you can easily add one back on. It's much more effective than wearing one bulky layer! As you build your hiking wardrobe, remember you don't need to buy everything at once. Start with good base and outer layers, and then add mid-layers as needed. 😉
