Off Japanese island, an eruption

Mar 20, 2024

The island of Ioto, formerly Iwo Jima, has frequent eruptions both on and around it. Usually, these are not out of the existing crater nor the resurgent dome that make up the island, but around the edges, especially in the water. In November of 2023, a new little island was born off the coast of Ioto and became connected to the island, but now all that is left is a small rock sticking up, since the waves wore away most of the rocks produced by the eruption.

On March 16, 2024, the Japan Coast Guard photographed several volcanic steam plumes in the area of the "new island," confirming that the earthquake activity that had been recorded there indicated an underwater eruption.

We don't know yet whether this eruption will last long enough to produce a new island, but it's exciting to see what will happen!
