Behind-the-Scenes Insights into Puppet Blood Manga

Oct 11, 2024

So I approach Pj to help look into puppet blood manga and share their review on the manga about months ago, I can't really remember. But I know it wasn't recently since we last talked.

So this evening, I got a message from them agreeing to review the manga and apologizing for the delay and postponing which was understandable, but then comes with a question they had to ask.

I didn't expect it but it was very much okay to me that they asked so I could clarify that.

They asked three questions and also pointed out one issue that I end up clarifying to them. I will just have to share my answer to them for the question they asked in this article update on the Puppet blood manga.

It was almost like an interview but it was just perfectly fine.

So it went like this:

𝗣𝗷: What are your main inspiration ( both artistically and narratively) for puppet blood?

𝗖𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘀: Puppet Blood draws inspiration from horror movies featuring witch dolls, particularly Chucky, which I've always been fascinated by. I wanted to create something original by making a doll the protagonist, but with a twist. This witch doll isn't solely good; she has a dark side, killing those she deems terrible sinners. She embodies both good and evil, making her a complex hero.

Additionally, the Indonesian movie Suzanna influenced the doll's mixed personality. Puppet Blood is a dark fantasy manga, but it deviates from the typical genre examples, like Junji Ito's works. My inspiration stems from real-life horror movies, rather than traditional manga.

What drove me to create Puppet Blood was the absence of a witch doll protagonist in manga. I saw an opportunity to craft something unique, and thus, the witch doll, was born.

I initially approached Puppet Blood as a short story, planning only nine chapters. Consequently, the early chapters progressed at a rapid pace, and the artwork was created somewhat hastily.

However, in 2023, my plans evolved, and I decided to enhance the artwork in future chapters, addressing the pace and resolving unanswered questions from the early chapters.

Although I hadn't extensively read manga previously, I've since explored dark fantasy titles like Berserk, Tokyo Ghoul, and Junji Ito's works. This exposure inspired me to refine my craft and infuse Puppet Blood with a darker, more fantastical atmosphere throughout.
