ABC News is one of the most established names in American journalism—rooted in broadcast television, but increasingly shaped by streaming, mobile viewing, and on-demand habits. For many people, ABC News still means morning headlines with Good Morning America and the evening wrap-up with World News Tonight. But behind the scenes, the division has been working to make sure ABC’s reporting shows up in the places modern audiences actually watch: free streaming platforms, connected TVs, and subscription streaming bundles.
What ABC News is today
ABC News is Disney’s news division, producing journalism across broadcast programs, digital publishing, and streaming news products. The mission hasn’t changed—cover major events, verify facts, and deliver context—but the delivery has: stories now have to work as live coverage, short clips, and longform explainers all at once.
ABC News Live: the streaming engine
A major pillar of ABC’s modern strategy is ABC News Live, a 24/7 streaming news channel. ABC and Roku announced Roku as the launch destination when ABC News Live debuted in April 2018—an early move into the “always-on” streaming format that now defines a lot of TV news consumption.
ABC News Live has continued expanding distribution. Disney also integrated ABC News Live into Disney+ in the U.S. as part of its “continuous playlists” feature, beginning in early September 2024.
The big idea: keep ABC’s reporting available whether someone is a cable viewer, a cord-cutter, or a streaming-only household.
The flagship shows that still anchor the brand
Even with streaming growth, ABC News is still defined by its core broadcast franchises—because they set editorial tone and create reporting that travels across every platform:
Good Morning America (daily morning news and interviews)
ABC World News Tonight with David Muir (evening headline newscast)
Nightline (late-night news and longform reporting)
20/20 (investigations and newsmagazine storytelling)
This Week (politics and public affairs)
ABC describes World News Tonight with David Muir as the most-watched newscast in the U.S., with Muir serving as anchor and managing editor.
And when NBC announced its own Nightly News anchor change, the AP noted that ABC’s David Muir became the longest-serving evening news anchor among the big three broadcast networks.
Leadership and editorial direction
In August 2024, Disney announced Almin Karamehmedovic as president of ABC News.
Since then, industry coverage has described ABC News leadership outlining strategic “pillars” and priorities—focused on evolving the organization after a difficult stretch for the broader media business.
The business pressures reshaping the newsroom
Like most major media organizations, ABC News has faced cost-cutting and restructuring pressures as traditional TV economics change. In March 2025, reporting described Disney cutting about 200 roles across the ABC News Group and Disney Entertainment Networks and consolidating parts of the newsmagazine operation (including merging 20/20 and Nightline), along with shutting down FiveThirtyEight.
Why ABC News still matters
In a fragmented media world, big newsrooms still matter most when speed and verification count—major storms, elections, overseas crises, and national emergencies. ABC News’ challenge (and opportunity) is to keep the authority and trust built on broadcast, while distributing that same reporting in the formats people use now: streaming, mobile, and on-demand. ABC News Live—plus its integration into Disney’s streaming ecosystem—is a clear signal that ABC is building for a future where “the channel” matters less than being available everywhere the audience already is.
