Cybersecurity as a career.

Cybersecurity as a career.

Aug 28, 2023

I get different versions of this question all the time: "Hey Ty, how do I get into cybersecurity?", "Quick one Tyrus, I just graduated with a Bsc. IT and want to join the cybersecurity career, how do I do it?"

Granted, I do my best to respond to each and everyone of the LinkedIn and Twitter DMs which come my way since I understand perfectly well that not everyone has it figured out. The fact of the matter is, there's just an inundation of information out there on how to craft your journey through this exciting field but also there's a dearth of what exactly you should focus on. This leads to widespread frustration from people who have just had to contend with graduation projects and endless googling without much headway. On the other hand, there are institutions which have sprouted in the recent past which onboard enthusiastic graduates or even people in career transition into the field but the feedback is they still end up in classroom style delivery methods thus deflating their passion and zeal to pursue cybersecurity.

After having been in this field for over 14 years, I can confidently say that there's no one-size fits all journey into the field because my own journey was nothing close to what people have access to today. It was all by accident and I have come to appreciate the value in mentoring people who are in the journey to join cybersecurity or are looking to transition from other facets of technology. Some quick statistics as to why this is the field you should be looking to join;

Cybersecurity/Information security is primed to be among the top 10 paying jobs globally as outlined by the reputable job platform Indeed. At the same time its the Udacity projects Cybersecurity to be among the fastest growing career for 2023. From these statistics it's quite easy to see why companies are continuously investing in relevant skill sets and as it has become apparent, data protection is just getting more complex with the advent of so many new technologies meshing with existing tech. What's even more interesting is that majority of these jobs are even offered on a Remote basis meaning that you wouldn't necessarily require to leave the country at all. A few do offer visa sponsorship and relocation assistance.

But more importantly, cybersecurity has a vertical for just about everyone in the tech space from developers, networking professionals, data analysts, QA in fields such as Threat Hunting, Penetration Testing, Vulnerability Assessment, Research and Development, Governance, Risk and Compliance and many more.

So how do we move from here you may ask? Well, you're in luck. I have a mentorship program just for you irrespective of which section of the journey you are on. Whether you are a beginner, intermediary or even an expert looking to pivot your career, I have prepared a comprehensive program to guide you and to a large extend assist you in securing your spot in this competitive field.
