Human contact should mean rescue. For Kaelin, it means threat assessment.
Chapter Four of Resonant, “Contact,” is live.
After the storm passes, Kaelin, Arya, and ORIN are still in the wreckage of Ashkaru’s industrial deadlands: exhausted, injured, low on supplies, and running out of filter life. Then ORIN detects a distant engine vibration.
A skimmer.
Human-operated.
That should be hope.
But Kaelin knows better than to trust anything that sounds like rescue. Contact means calculation: weapons, distance, exits, who looks at Arya too long, who notices the brace, and who says help like it might become a cage.
This chapter introduces the first real human threat outside the Cradle: scavengers who see Kaelin and Arya as salvage. It also brings Thane Arrow out of Solen’s message and into the ash, along with Nix, a pilot/engineer who immediately has to deal with ORIN’s judgmental existence.
And Kaelin does not trust them.
But she does set rules.
Arya stays with her.
ORIN stays with her.
No restraints.
No sedatives unless necessary.
No touching the brace without telling her first.
It’s not trust yet. It’s survival with terms.
