Stories this stump could tell

Stories this stump could tell

Jan 22, 2024

What has this old growth stump seen in its years? This was photographed at Gordon Bay Provincial Park just before the snow fall. This old Xpey' would have been hundreds of years old when it was cut somewhere near the Cowichan Lake foreshore. Perhaps it was cut 100 years ago? Logging happened in the mid 1800s at the Lake. Anyways, it has been here whether growing, floating and then settling on a beach for a long long time. The stories it could tell.

Xpey' is Hul'q'umi'num' for Western Red Cedar. Hul'q'umi'num' is the first language where I am blessed to live, the Cowichan Valley.
