You just got an audition! You start doing what you need to do... You do the homework, you do the deep dive, you do everything you need to do to prepare... Then... all of a sudden you realize... "I NEED A READER". One of the questions I've been asked multiple times... What happens if I can't find a reader... So below I'm going to give you some options. Some are work and some are easy fixes but either way.. here's my opinion.
What to look for in a reader:
You need a reader who's going to be there for you and support you. This is not someone who you need to give permission to give you any type of critique. If you have a coach that can also be your reader... fantastic. But I also come from a school of you don't need to be coached for everything. Set those boundaries with your readers. It's okay.
My opinion is that your reader should be giving something back to you. That doesn't mean they need to be your scene partner who is going toe to toe with you. But some energy is required in my opinion. Other actors and peers are ideal. Your family is great but they are most likely not actors and don't know the world and what you need.
Create a community:
With social media at your finger tips you should never be in a place where you can't find a peer to help you with a read. Start a group chat on facebook, instagram, email chain... whatever and when someone in the group needs a reader just message everyone letting them know what you need.
"Hey friends! Looking for a female presenting reader for a 5 page scene in about an hour. Who's available?"
There are also tons of public facebook groups just search 'I need a reader' and you'll find plenty.
Personally, this is my favorite option.
Reader specific websites:
There are fantastic websites that have been created to help actors who need a reader/rehearsal buddy.
My first recommendations is WE AUDITION www.WeAudition.com. Here you have the option of finding a reader. You can view reviews, read bios and see IMDB, resumes of your readers. Some folks charge, some folks don't, some folks work on tips. There is something for everyone. You can also sign up to be a reader (subscription fee).
Whether you have a reader to read with you in person or virtually. Make sure they can be heard but not louder than you. They want to hear both of you. Also remember you're the focus of the audition not your reader.
