Give a name / change name

Give a name / change name

Tell you a little secret. When I was a boy, my English teacher asked each of us in the class to have an English name (or Christian name). As a lazy student, I just took a glance on my textbook and found some candidates (I didn't even look up the dictionary or other sources!) I chose 'Peter' and said to myself, 'OK, Peter.' My brother ,who was sitting beside me, gave me feedback, 'Oh no no no! Peter is so old-school!' So I took his advice and looked around. I saw the gift from my teacher - it was a dolphin water game from TOMY (disclaimer: this prose is not a commercial!) I whispered 'Tomy Mui' to myself...the consecutive 'm's were so clumsy. My lips didn't feel smooth when I pronounced 'Tomy Mui'. I tried changing the first M to N...Tony Mui...wow, it was (and is) simple and clean! This was how I got my English name, or you can say, this is my alias.

We have heard a few stories from the Bible about giving names or changing names. Jacob, son of Isaac in Genesis, is given a new name called 'Israel' - yes, the name of the nation Israel today. Most of the naming or changing of the names, if not all, in biblical and Ancient Near East culture, have specific meanings. A name reflects one's personality, feature, or even one's fate. So that changing of names means changing of the above aspects. It brings hope to a person.

One of my friends recently completed her legal procedure of changing name. She gladly showed her new ID card on social media. Though her name change was the idea from a fortune teller, I left a word on her post, wished her happy life from now on. I believe this is what she wanted (and everyone ever wanted too.)

Shalom.
