What Do Songs Sound Like Before Being Mixed?

Mar 26, 2022

In this video, we listen to two previous covers (Aint No Sunshine and Nothing Else Matters) following recorded, and compare how they sound once ready for release. A lot that goes into preparing music after recording (often called tracking). Balancing volumes, making sure instruments dont clash, mitigating harsh or muddy frequencies while highlighting ones that us humans enjoy...And effects: Aint No Sunshine had just a couple enhancements. I used a bit of reverb to make the guitars sound like they were on stage, compressors on tracks to normalizer volume levels, and some frequency equalization changes. Lastly, a Temper digital distortion pedal created the minor distortion heard in the lead guitar. Nothing Else Matters is significantly more intricate and complex. A good bit more equalization was necessary for all its pieces. Metallica employs significant use of a Chorus effect, so nine of the individual tracks in this cover used a Chorus. There were also multiple tracks that used delay and reverb. Additionally, for the solo parts, I used an MCM 800 amp model and M65 Cabinet, with 2 different tube driver pedals to create the distortion. Compressors also graced many of the tracks in this cover, which is very common.
