ππ HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. RICHARD GREEN! ππ - THE FOUNDER OF THE Archaeological Excavations of the Ancient Theatre Site at Paphos Cyprus

Emeritus Professor Richard Green, has dedicated more than three decades to one of Australiaβs most significant archaeological projects in the Mediterranean: the excavation of the ancient theatre at Nea Paphos, Cyprus.
What began in 1995 as a meeting of the right people, opportunities and ideas has evolved into an extraordinary journey through ancient history, archaeology and cultural heritage. Today, the project stands as a powerful connection between Australia and Cyprus, revealing how the past continues to shape our identities and our future.
For Professor Green, archaeology is much more than discovering ancient objects. It is about understanding who we are and learning from the generations that came before us.
βWe live in difficult times and there are threats on all sides. We are in danger of losing our way of life and our identities,β he explains.
He believes that rediscovering our past can help societies face the challenges of the present, reminding us that our ancestors also lived through periods of profound change.
From Manchester to the Mediterranean
Professor Greenβs journey into archaeology began on the outskirts of Manchester, England. The first person in his extended family to attend university, he discovered his passion for the ancient world through the study of Latin and ancient Greek.
At University College London, he benefited from outstanding academic mentors and developed a specialisation in Greek archaeology. It was also there that he met Vassos Karageorghis, who would later become Director of Antiquities in Cyprus.
Their friendship would eventually play a decisive role in bringing an Australian archaeological team to Paphos.
After completing his Bachelor of Arts with Honours, Green received a scholarship to study at the British School of Archaeology at Athens. His experiences in Greek museums and archaeological excavations helped him understand both the complexity of fieldwork and the importance of preserving the material evidence of the past.
The Beginning of a Historic Project in Paphos
In 1995, after taking up the Chair of Classical Archaeology at the University of Sydney, Green saw an opportunity to combine his academic responsibilities with his studentsβ need for practical archaeological experience.
He also had a personal connection to Cyprus. Having experienced the events of 1974 while isolated on a Greek island, he was deeply conscious of the suffering and division affecting the island.
With these considerations in mind, he contacted his old friend Vassos Karageorghis, who welcomed the idea of a University of Sydney excavation team in Cyprus.
The proposed location was Paphos, where evidence suggested that an ancient theatre might be waiting to be uncovered.
And so began a remarkable archaeological undertaking that would continue for more than 30 years.

An Ancient Theatre That Tells the Story of Civilisations
At the heart of the excavation lies the theatre itself, a monument whose successive transformations reflect the changing fortunes of Paphos and the wider eastern Mediterranean.
Originally constructed around 290 BC, the theatre underwent several major renovations. It was remodelled and reopened with an international theatre festival in 141 BC, transformed again during the reign of Emperor Augustus, and rebuilt in the second century AD.
These changes reflected the importance of Paphos, which served as the islandβs capital during the Roman period.
The Roman theatre was an impressive structure, featuring imported marble columns, elaborate coloured-marble flooring, water installations and portrait sculptures associated with Emperor Antoninus and his family.
Its story eventually took a dramatic turn in AD 365, when a devastating earthquake and a major tsunami struck the region.
The theatre was abandoned, and parts of its structure were reused in later buildings, including elements associated with the Chrysopolitissa Basilica. [ THERE I HAVE OTHER PROJECT /MARKETING]
The site thus connects visitors with multiple chapters of Cypriot history, from the Hellenistic and Roman worlds to the development of early Christianity.

From Theatre to Medieval Industry: Unexpected Discoveries
The archaeological story did not end with the theatreβs abandonment.
Centuries later, the area became home to pottery workshops dating to the Crusader period. These workshops produced decorated and glazed ceramics that travelled far beyond Cyprus, including to locations associated with the Crusader states in the Holy Land.
One discovery particularly fascinated Professor Green: a sixth-century AD plate decorated with imagery recalling the Nile.
Although the decoration suggested connections with distant places, analysis revealed that the clay originated in Paphos.
As Green explains, βThe fascinating thing is that the clay of which it was made is Paphian. The man travelled, not the pot.β
This small object captures a much larger truth about the history of Cyprus. The island was never simply an isolated destination; it was part of a network of cultural exchange, travel, trade and human encounters connecting different civilisations.
Preserving the Past and Sharing It with Future Generations
As the excavation moves into its next phase, one of the project's priorities is the detailed publication of its findings, ensuring that decades of research remain accessible to future scholars and the wider public.
Professor Green hopes the work will continue in the same collaborative spirit, bringing together people from different cultures and backgrounds.
Throughout the project, the team has received a warm welcome from the people of Cyprus and sustained support from the Cypriot community in Australia.
The excavation has also created opportunities for people outside academia to participate, allowing members of the broader Australian community to experience both archaeological research and life in Cyprus.
For Green, the greatest achievement is not simply the number of discoveries made, but the opportunity to share this experience with others.
Standing in the orchestra of a theatre that once accommodated approximately 8,500 spectators, he reflects on the personal significance of the project:
βWhat can one say? It is the fulfilment of a dream, and one I would like others to share.β
Paphos: Where History Becomes a Living Experience
The ancient theatre of Nea Paphos is more than an archaeological monument. It is a living connection between history, architecture, art, culture and the people who continue to give the city its identity.
Its layers tell a story of construction and destruction, cultural exchange and renewal. They also demonstrate how the heritage of Paphos can connect the ancient world with contemporary life.
Professor Richard Greenβs decades of dedication remind us that protecting cultural heritage is not only about preserving what remains of the past. It is also about creating opportunities for new generations to discover, understand and experience it.
At Nea Paphos, history is not silent or forgotten. It is waiting to be explored, shared and brought to life again. =====================================================================
