an uncertain year

an uncertain year

Jul 26, 2023

Most of us benefit from a change of scene once in a while, and a holiday can provide a change of pace and scenery. It’s a break from our responsibilities too, whether that be a job, caregiving or supporting others around us.

But 2023 is proving to be a very tricky year for vacations. Strikes on the trains, at the airports and elsewhere are making travel difficult. The heat is making many parts of the world hard to enjoy, while wildfires are throwing many holidays into chaos.

And then there’s the budget. The rising cost of living has meant not only that we have less available to spend, but the price of holidaying has risen too.

So if as seniors we want a break, what do we do?

Here are a few tips for choosing the right holiday when life is uncertain.

Look for senior deals

Holiday companies, hotels and even spas often offer discounts for seniors. Check the websites or give the provider a call.

Research travel discounts

Seniors can buy railcards and coach cards to lower the cost of travel. They can also apply for free bus passes once they reach retirement age.

Check the weather outlook

Health conditions can come with weather warnings, such as avoid extremes of heat and cold. Will you revel in the weather or hide in your air conditioning?

Consider access

UK holiday companies are pretty good now at stating whether facilities are accessible for the less mobile.

Compare prices

Holidays will almost always be more expensive during school holidays. Wait until the children are back in the classroom and prices may well be a great deal lower. And in the UK September can bring us some glorious days.
