Would home sharing suit your parent?

Would home sharing suit your parent?

Sep 20, 2023

When ageing means slowing down, losing mobility or spending more time alone, homesharing is worth a look.

The principle behind a homeshare is that an older person who could do with help around the home opens their doors to a younger person who needs accommodation. There are agencies who are practised and practical in matching sharers and will help them to come to a safe and mutually beneficial arrangement.

A recent report from the Homeshare Association, which is a network of such agencies, has found that dementia and poor mobility are two of the most common reasons why older adults seek homeshare arrangements. Other reaons include Parkinson’s disease, social isolation, deteriorating eyesight, deafness, bereavement, falls risk, bipolar disorder, heart/lung risk, and memory issues.

Benefits of Homeshare for Older Adults

Homeshare can offer a number of benefits for older adults, including:

  • Companionship and social interaction: Homeshare can help to reduce loneliness and isolation, which are common among older adults.

  • Support with daily tasks: Homesharers can provide assistance with tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and transportation.

  • Peace of mind: Homesharers can provide peace of mind for older adults and their families, knowing that there is someone there to help in case of an emergency.
