Adaptations

Jan 20, 2023

So you have taken the plunge and you are trying out the carnivore diet.  If you are new or even if you are experienced and changing up your macros, you should be aware that your body is going to go through some significant adaptations.

First and foremost, you can expect to experience some fluid rebalancing. When you decrease your intake of carbohydrates, your insulin levels will drop, which sends a signal to your kidneys to release sodium from your body. This can result in losing a significant amount of water weight, possibly up to 10lbs in just a couple of days. As a result, it's not uncommon to feel dehydrated during this time.

Additionally, your body will be transitioning from using sugar to fat as its primary energy source. This can be a difficult change, especially if you have been accustomed to consuming a lot of high carbohydrate foods. It can feel similar to giving up an addiction, but the end result is worth it.

Another adaptation that you may experience is a change in your hormone levels. Thyroid hormone levels may decrease, as T3, a hormone produced by the thyroid that plays a major role in regulating body temperature, metabolism, and heart rate, is closely connected to dietary carbohydrates. Furthermore, cortisol levels may increase as your body thinks "I'm starving for sugar," causing a release of cortisol to increase blood glucose. This is a natural sympathetic stress response, also known as "flight or fight" to go hunt for food.

However, don't let this discourage you! There are ways to limit the discomfort during this transition period. One of the most important things is to make sure you are eating enough. Under-eating is the number one reason people unnecessarily suffer. Additionally, make sure you are staying hydrated, supplementing with electrolytes, and if you have any gastrointestinal issues, try drinking meaty bone broth or taking a supplement like LMNT. With these tricks, you'll be on your way to the adapted state of bliss in no time.
