Convertible Housing Welcome Box

Convertible Housing Welcome Box

imageScreenshot of my webpage in progress: Housing Welcome Box - A FutureMakers project from @TheRehn, created at KWMC The Factory for a We Can Make brief. 4 views of the digital design, the hexagonal box and sides being used as a laptop lap desk, free-standing shelves and sat on. Placeholder text ‘one or two sentence summary- aims?’ Navigational links to brief, background, concept development and a placeholder link above two photos of an assembled side upright as a lap tray and sideways as shelves.

Some of you may remember my post on social media about the Convertible Housing Welcome Box I was working on as part of the Future Makers programme over summer. Unfortunately further work on decorating and assembling it has been waylaid by my bad hip, which has made physical work (or sitting up to use a Mac) impractical. However I have been working on a one page website about it, to make it easier to share and discuss.

I'm finding it a bit tricky to explain the concept and design journey clearly and concisely. I want to include the influence of my experience moving into and living in emergency accommodation, as well as our We Can Make Homes brief, the construction and development of it and my various ideas for it going forward. But I don't want to land up with an essay!

So I thought I would post some images on here and on Instagram and ask what you would be interested to know about this project; to hopefully help me decide what to include 😃.

(Disappointingly Buy Me A Coffee doesn’t support adding alt text to images, so I have provided an image description as part of the caption below each image.)

Initial brainstorm focusing on Welcoming Home's and Connected Communities. Ideas include: Homes are for people, not segregated, resisting commodification. 'Welcome' box - can be used as seating inside and outside drawing of a rectangular box. Could be hexagonal, comes apart for two small benches or tables? Shelves / planter info about the factory and suggestions on it? fabric strips, local makers, tea towel with map of area, hooks? Connecting people and nature.

imageDiagram of dimensions: 300mm on the side and 430mm along the top, drawings of the side and how it could fit or assemble.

imagePrototyping dimensions with cardboard: I am a white woman, sat on the floor laughing, with my legs stuck out and cardboard prototype over my lap, as a lapdesk.

imagePrototyping the assembly: Small wooden hexagon pieces connected to panels of corrugated card with slits for the pieces to sit it, to see how the pieces can slot together.

image Assembled CNC cut pieces: The pieces are assembled into the shelving configuration, I am stood next to them looking very happy.

imageHalf assembled wooden, hexagonal tray top, with one half lip attached.

imageSurface design ideas: Words from We Can Make ‘Together We Can Make…’ and instructional words to explain the usage. imageWooden half hexagon side as a table, a bee print taped on the side and words - sit and chat, get your studying done, rest your feet, eat your dinner, put on your laptop and work, relax and colour, draw your next masterpiece, play a game, add shelves to store your stuff, take me outside and meet your neighbours, taped on to it to show decoration and usage possibilities.
