Should you buy Qantas Points?

Qantas 'Up to 50% More' Points Sale - Is it Worth It?

Airline Frequent Flyer programs such as Qantas often sell points direct to their members and also semi-regularly run 'sales' on the purchase of points.

You may have received an email from Qantas advertising a 'top up' points sale offering up to a 50% bonus on points purchased until the 13th of October.

  • Get 25% more Qantas Points when you top-up with 10,000 - 29,000 points

  • Get 50% more Qantas Points when you top-up with 30,000 - 150,000 points

If you want to buy points from Qantas this is the link however My general advice is NEVER BUY QANTAS POINTS direct from Qantas.

Why SHOULD you consider buying Airline Points?

Sometimes it WILL make some financial sense to buy airline points if you need a very small and immediate amount to get you a reward seat which is available and ready to book.

OR

There is a historically good sale from a points system that has good availability and offers good 'bang-for-buck' - such as Aeroplan (Air Canada's points program that has heaps of partners and good pricing). You can then use these points to book an available reward seat for a much cheaper 'price' then paying for a cash ticket.

Why you SHOULD NOT buy Qantas Points

The main reason why you shouldn't buy Qantas Points unless absolutely desperate for a little 'top up' is that the pricing is never great compared to other programs that sell points AND more importantly it nearly always works out to be a better deal just buying wine from Qantas Wines with bonus points instead.

As an example you could buy x2 cases of the wine below to earn a minimum 40 840 points for $840 Earning 48.62 points per $1 spent.

This also doesn't take into account the other Qantas Wines discounts and bonuses such as the current 5000 points bonus for new customers or the $100 Qantas hotels voucher when you spend over $300.

Buying 45000 points (30k + 15k bonus) direct from Qantas in this sale would cost you $929. This gets you basically the same 48.44 points per $1 spend but with no wine....

*Just be aware that points from Qantas Wine may not be credited immediately although you should receive them as soon as your order is dispatched. If needing points in a hurry it is usually best to call Qantas Wines on 1800 505 004 and order over the phone to emphasise you need the points ASAP as well as the fact that the consultants will sometimes offer additional points for a larger spend.
