Why wear a hat.........?

Chaps....

I must admit, I have always been a bit of a fan of hats. As a kid, I would always be found wearing some form of hat and usually pretending to be a soldier or spaceman and the hat would be a prop of choice in my fantasy scenario.

As I progressed along my life journey, I have made career choices that have involved the wearing of quite distinctive headwear, such as the beret and peaked caps I wore when in the Royal Air Force and then the instantly recognisable helmut I wore as a patrol officer when I walked the beat in my early days as a British police officer.

So, it must come a no surprise to discover that I have no qualms about sporting a fine titfer (titfer = 'titfer tat', Cockney rhyming slang for hat). In fact, as I have progressed in age I have come to increasingly appreciate the comfort and practicality of the classical dress hats of the golden age of stylish men, such as the trilby, homberg and bowler hat. These stalwarts of iconic mens style have fallen into non-use in the modern era, but they are just so achingly cool and useful that I just refuse to let them slip out of my life - so I can often be seen sporting my trilby or flat cap on most autumn/winter and spring days.

Many chaps feel self-conscious about wearing a nice hat these days, preferring the anonymity of the common baseball cap (spits...), but I think we can do better than that, don't you?

So next time you think about wearing a hat, why not pop over to ebay and invest just a small amount (usually under £20) in a nice trilby/homburg or bowler. You will be amazed what you can achieve for that cost and you will undoubtedly be the best hatted man in any room.

Salute to you all.
