Okay, that's not really a potato, that is an Indonesian Blue Tongue Skink, which is a lizard cosplaying as a potato. His name is Shrek, we call him Shrek-a-doodle-doo and Potato Dragon. I got Shrek when he was a hissy little baby that was fed the standard diet of... high quality canned cat food. It's in nearly every care guide — "Feed high quality canned cat food until around six months old, then switch to high quality canned dog food."
It seemed a little weird that we were going to feed something that was designed for cats and dogs, whose digestive tracts have evolved through domestication to handle all of the crap we put in commercial foods to a lizard that is not at all domesticated. Especially when their diet is literally nearly identical to that of a bearded dragon and we don't recommend those things for them!
I used raw dog foods for a time, focusing on lean protein like turkey, to mix into his veggies. The result was always the same. Turkey gone, veggies...being eaten by the isopods instead of the skink. I tried Repashy, which he did like for all of two weeks. Eventually I came across Reptilinks. I picked up a couple of omnivore blends when I ordered frog links for my hognose (definitely another one worth trying!) and Shrek took to those immediately. The best part? Shrek had no idea he was eating those leafy greens he was feeding his isopods!
While I would occasionally feed live insects for enrichment, the goal was to cut back on his protein as he was over six months old and needed to be eating those veggies. I fed him those links, while rotating fruits as treats, the occasional Repashy blend, and he still got the Instinct brand Turkey dog food for Christmas and Thanksgiving (With Repashy pumpkin for dessert!) but those links served as a staple.
Recently, I acquired a couple of clubtail iguanas and they are mainly vegetarian, so I knew I would be going through more veggies. I offered him a plate of greens with incredibly low expectations. Y'all, he cleaned his plate! This boy ate all the greens I gave him! The links will remain part of his rotation, but we've made the switch to salads and Reptilinks made it possible!
Moral of the story? You can absolutely use Reptilinks to convert a picky eater!
