I just shared the story of knowing within the first 15 minutes that my LinkedIn meeting was completely unaligned.
But I overlooked the most important part.
Success is not measured by how often everything works.
Pablo Picasso produced an estimated 147,800 works across several artistic forms. Only a fraction became the works most people recognize.
Frank Sinatra recorded more than 1,200 songs. Approximately 209 reached the Billboard pop singles charts, about 17 percent.
Babe Ruth stepped up to bat 8,399 times and hit 714 home runs, approximately 8.5 percent of his official at-bats.
Imagine if they had allowed their egos to define every creation, song, or turn at the plate that did not become a celebrated success.
Their greatness was not built on perfection.
It was built on their willingness to keep creating, performing, adjusting, and returning.
That is the real lesson from my unaligned meeting.
It was one meeting.
It gave me information.
It did not earn the power to define my next conversation.
Sometimes, we need to put our egos aside and examine what happened through another lens.
