In the last few weeks, clubs including Aston Villa, Burnley and reportedly Chelsea have been squeezing in new front-of-shirt gambling advertising deals before the Premier League ban forces them to stop in 2026. This makes a mockery of the Premier League’s decision to end such deals and shows once again how some clubs are willing to profit from misery. On top of that, Sky Bet extended their partnership with the English Football League by five years.
As long as gambling companies continue to advertise addictive products freely, the consequences are devastating – every day someone in the UK takes their life due to gambling.
A stark reminder of this came yesterday, when a coroner concluded that Betfair should have done more to help Luke Ashton, with gambling disorder found to be a cause of his death.
Times like this remind us how important the work of Gambling with Lives is. The charity is working to prevent gambling-related suicides, and support bereaved families, and receiving new requests for bereavement support every week.
