I watched helplessly as the keys slipped from my hand and fell to the floor. It let out an odd jingle as the keys on the ring clattered against each other and the floor. It was the most irritating sound that I had heard today.
My lips curled up as I glared at the keys in disgust. Shaking my head and mumbling the most heinously appropriate string of curses I could muster, I bent over to pick them up. I froze as I heard another frustrating metallic clattering against the floor. I could feel my left eye start to twitch as the space between my left elbow and my chest was glaringly apparent. My water bottle slowly rolled next to the pair of keys, brushing against my outstretched hand before slowly rolling away. Taking a deep breath, I picked up the water bottle and sat it upright before grabbing the keys.
Fiddling with the bunched-up keys far longer than I’d care to admit, I forced the wrong one into the keyhole… Of course, I only realised after the lock refused to turn. Taking another breath, I tried the key next to it. The door, finally, clicked open and I pushed the door open. I felt a sudden pain in my toes before my feet rolled over a cylindrical something. I stumbled forward, spilling the contents of my unzipped bag onto the floor as I too fell along with it. Glaring back at the floor just outside the door, I saw my water bottle rolling away.
I took a deep breath and carefully got up and walked after the water bottle. Taking great care, I retrieved the key from the door and walked inside with it. Closing the door gently, I locked it. Carefully, I picked up all the spilt papers and books and placed them in my bag, ensuring that I, gently, zipped it up. With everything in my hands again, I slowly walked to my room.
I took a few moments to size up the door to my room. It seemed almost like a trap… With another deep breath and careful movements, I was safely in my room. Placing the bag against my bed, the water onto my table along with my keys and my phone, I sighed deeply. I stared at myself in the mirror, shaking my head as I saw the tie still tightly fashioned around my neck. Smiling at my reflection, I carefully undid the tie and threw it on my bed. My shirt was unbuttoned and followed the tie. My belt was next. I looked down and was about to kick my shoes off but shook my head and smiled. I sat at the edge of my bed, untied the lacings and slowly took them off along with my socks. Placing the socks into my shoes I got up and walked past my empty mirror and placed them with the other pairs of shoes next to the wall.
Breathing deeply, I walked back to the mirror to stare at myself once more. Pulling my pants off, I smiled. I had one leg left and looked up to celebrate my success when I saw myself crying. I dropped my pants and rushed a hand to my face. That was odd… I didn’t feel any tears. Shuffling closer to the mirror, I saw that the tears were gone. Shaking my head, I shuffled back and glanced down at my pants. I briefly thought of kicking the remaining leg off of my foot but decided it was better to be careful. Especially with the day that I was having. As I bent over to grab the bundled-up pants at the hem, I noticed something strange.
I slowly raised, my hand pulling the pants up my leg, and peeked at the mirror from the bottom of the vanity. I felt the tears trickling down my face this time as I saw myself standing upright in the mirror before me. I was… in a quarrel with someone… or something to the side. I turned to the right, where I was looking in the mirror, fear clenched my heart as I expected to see something on my bed. Seeing nothing, I turned back to the mirror. I felt my breath hitch as I was no longer there…
I looked all over the mirror as I hid behind a picture frame of my family. Blinking away the pooling tears, I decided that I was out in the sun too much. Or maybe I had kept my frustration pent up too long and it got to my head. Yeah… that had to be it. And I was just about to fully freak out once my pants were off too. I chuckled to myself as I rose to my feet. I felt my eyebrow twitch as my reflection followed.
“It’s not polite to sneak up on people you know.”
I raised my leg and pulled my pants off. Throwing it next to my shoe, I walked over to my bed and sat at crawled onto it.
“I am so tired. I really need to sleep.” I heard my voice for the second time, but I shook my head as I pulled the cover over me. “Yeah, I could really use some sleep.”
“You really could. You looked like you were going to have a full-blown meltdown.”
“Yep… I really was, wasn’t I?” I chuckled to myself. I heard myself laugh along and the sound died in my throat. Sighing, I pushed the cover off me and looked around the room. Seeing no one there, I shimmied to the edge of the bed. Jumping across the room, I picked up my pants and quickly put them on.
“I really hate when you make me do exercises. I’m like the opposite to you, so I’m not…” I jumped back to the bed. I heard heavy panting as I kneeled on my bed and put on my shirt. “I’m not as fit as you are!”
Humming to myself, I shifted to the edge of the bed where I could get to the door without walking in front of the mirror. The heavy sounds of footsteps banging against the floor shook me to my core, causing me to raise my feet into the air. There was a loud clicking that I knew to be my door locking.
“I’m sorry it had to be this way.” The voice was distant. I pushed myself off of the bed and darted towards the door. “You’re single but I’m not!” I twisted the doorknob desperately as soon as I reached it. The voice was growing louder now. “I tried to get them to leave me alone so I could do what I’m supposed to but…”
The voice was in the room with me.
Turning, I saw my head sticking out of the mirror. I groaned as I braced myself on the counter of the vanity and pulled myself through the… “Now, let’s have a proper chat, shall we?”
