I built the VATSIM Flight Information Display System (FIDS) because I wanted that extra layer of immersion, the feeling of standing in the terminal at Zurich, Heathrow, or JFK, watching the departures board update in real-time.
What started as a personal passion project has quickly grown into a tool used by over a thousand simmers globally! Seeing people run the board on their second monitors, iPads, and dedicated Raspberry Pi kiosks has been incredibly rewarding.
I host the flight board entirely myself on a home enterprise-grade server cluster (Proxmox/Ceph). While I love providing this tool to the community 100% for free, running 24/7 servers and maintaining a gigabit fiber connection definitely adds up on the monthly electricity and internet bills.
