Lawful disobedience isn't the first thing that comes to the mind of the average Brit. We think of protesting, and we imagine giving full cry to all our outrage and frustration, yelling, screaming, breaking things, being violent and wild. Humans are animals, after all, and the British are a species that has been left feral for most of their lives. Confinement and boundaries are unnatural to them, and they still believe they can change the manner of things by slamming against the sides of them.
Lawful disobedience is harder for the police to act against - and thus harder for those you're protesting against to ignore, harder for other people to take issue with, and therefore likely, in the long run, to be more successful.
Lawful disobedience is the refusal of women of colour to give up their seats on public transport for white people during segregation in America.
Lawful disobedience is working to rule rather than striking.
Lawful disobedience is writing and sending a daily letter - NOT an email - to your MP, to the Head of whichever government Department/s is/are responsible for whatever area you're protesting about, and to the Premiere of your country (Prime Minister, President, etc).
Lawful disobedience is asking companies you interview with, work for, or spend money with how they feel about contentious and problematic issues, and withdrawing your interest, labour, money if you find you are not in agreement.
Lawful disobedience is creating and publicly displaying challenging art that critiques the issue. ('Art' can include literature, poetry, and music, as well as more 'obvious' art.)
Lawful disobedience is home-schooling your children, so that you can teach them the full truth of sociopolitical issues.
Lawful disobedience is deliberately spoiling ballot papers by writing full criticism of the political action (or inaction) upon them, rather than using them to register a vote (if you don't feel a vote will change things - if you do feel voting could effect change, always vote, and encourage others who are in sympathy with you to do so too.)
Lawful disobedience is prioritising self-care; if you want a day to yourself, call in sick without apologising. If you don't want to apply for a job, and you're reliant on State welfare, don't apply for it. If you want to leave a job, leave - whether or not you have another option lined up. Become comfortable with saying 'No' without explanation or apology.
Lawful disobedience is writing and printing zines and pamphlets - learn to write legibly by hand, so that you are never dependent on technology, or publishing companies.
Lawful disobedience is compassion to the despised. As Walt Whitman exhorts us: "Give alms to all who ask." Give money to unhoused people. If you are in a hiring position, offer jobs to those least qualified for them, and invest in teaching them. If you are a teacher, don't reward ANYONE in your class, so as to include everyone, and teach those in your care that sometimes effort will go unrewarded, and even unacknowledged. Make the least attractive person you encounter the face of your brand, the centrepiece of your art. Write about non-white people, about non-cis people, about those with disabilities, about bisexual, lesbian, and gay people, about people in poverty, about criminals - and make them the heroes of your narratives, not apologies, villains, or objects of pity.
Lawful disobedience is refusing to engage with mass media - both social and mainstream. Read blogs by thinkers, not celebrities. Find out-of-print books. Watch TV programmes and films that haven't aired for a decade or more. Don't buy newspapers or magazines. De-prioritize spending time on social media.
Lawful disobedience is refusing to comply to culturally enforced beauty standards. Be as 'ugly' as you dare (you probably aren't ugly at all). Be clean, but unscented. Wear unfashionable clothes. Don't wear make up, or wear it in the most defiantly not-as-intended ways possible. Take, and post, unfiltered selfies.
Lawful disobedience is an infinite spectrum of possibilities. Explore the full remit of it. Embrace all of it. Try everything at least once, more if possible.
