At 12, leaving Chile marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey into self-discovery, resilience, and empowerment.

The Last Goodbye

Parting with my childhood friends, I embarked on a journey of profound change. At such a young age, leaving Santiago wasn't merely a change of location, it felt like leaving behind a piece of my essence. The familiar faces of friends and neighbors, the community I cherished – their absence marked a significant transformation in my life.

Life in the U.S.

Arriving in the United States brought challenges far beyond mere geographical displacement. It involved reimagining my identity in a new context. Navigating language barriers, cultural differences, and financial challenges shaped my daily experiences.

Facing Fears Head-On

Fear, as a child, was a silent companion, expressed through diary entries in my newly learned English. These pages captured my reality – wrestling with family upheavals and cultural shocks. Yet, through these fragmented English sentences, I discovered my voice and confronted my fears.

Language: The Bridge to Confidence

Mastering English represented the unlocking of countless opportunities for me. Under the wings of a dedicated teacher, language transitioned from an obstacle to a gateway, symbolizing my capacity to adjust and flourish in new surroundings.

Adaptation

During those times, maintaining a positive outlook was my strategy for survival. I held onto the hope for a brighter future, not letting present challenges dictate my path. School became a place of refuge, and writing, a form of escape. This period also reinforced the resilience and adaptability that are hallmarks of my Chilean heritage.

Hard Truths and Tough Lessons

Learning that my grandfather had not initiated our citizenship process was a stark awakening to life's unpredictability. This revelation served as a powerful lesson about the nature of promises and the often unforeseen course of life, highlighting the resilience needed to navigate such uncertainties.

My Message to Younger Me

I would tell my younger self to embrace the changes with bravery. Seek out sources of strength during tough times, find your supportive community, indulge in healthy practices, and allow your spirit to flourish. In the constantly changing tides of life, you'll discover your true essence.

For the Change-Makers

For those journeying through the unpredictable currents of life: draw inspiration from those you admire, prioritize your well-being, and follow a path that is authentically yours. Each challenge you encounter is not a barrier but a step towards a future that is uniquely yours to shape and define.

A New Perspective

My current perspective on change is one of creativity and opportunity. It's a chance to craft a meaningful life, not merely a struggle for survival. My past, with its fears and challenges, has shaped me into who I am, but it doesn't confine me. It forms the foundation of my enduring resilience.

Looking back, my move to the U.S. was the catalyst that propelled me to break free from generational patterns and turn adversity into a pathway for growth. This journey of transforming challenges into opportunities is a story I hold close to my heart and am proud to share with the world.
