When the Rules Disappear

In the UFC, fighters compete under rules designed to protect both competitors. On the street, there are no referees, no time limits, no weight classes, and no guarantee that your attacker will fight fair.

That means understanding some of the techniques banned in MMA can help you better understand real-world violence and self-defense.

This article is not encouraging anyone to start fights. The purpose is simple: if you are attacked and cannot escape, you need to know what works, what criminals may use against you, and what options may help you survive.

UFC Fouls and Illegal Techniques

Under the Unified Rules of MMA, many actions are prohibited, including:

  1. Headbutts

  2. Eye gouging

  3. Biting

  4. Spitting

  5. Fish hooking

  6. Hair pulling

  7. Groin attacks

  8. Fingers into cuts or body openings

  9. Small joint manipulation

  10. Strikes to the spine

  11. Strikes to the back of the head

  12. Throat strikes

  13. Grabbing the trachea

  14. Stomping a grounded opponent

  15. Kicking the head of a grounded opponent

  16. Kneeing the head of a grounded opponent

  17. Clawing or twisting flesh

  18. Grabbing the collarbone

  19. Kicking the kidney with the heel

  20. Spiking an opponent onto the head or neck

  21. Throwing an opponent out of the fighting area

  22. Holding shorts or gloves

  23. Fence grabbing and similar rule violations

Some of these are sporting fouls. Others are prohibited because they can permanently injure or kill someone.

The Techniques Most Relevant to Street Survival

Eye Attacks

The eyes are extremely vulnerable.

A quick eye jab, thumb gouge, or rake across the eyes can disrupt an attacker's vision and create an opportunity to escape.

The objective is not to stand there and continue fighting. The objective is to create distance and get away.

Groin Strikes

A hard strike to the groin can temporarily stop even a much larger attacker.

Knees, kicks, and upward strikes can be effective when someone is grabbing, restraining, or assaulting you.

Hair Pulling

In a sporting contest, hair pulling is illegal.

In a real attack, controlling someone's head controls their body. Criminals know this, which is why hair grabbing often appears in assaults.

Understanding this helps you defend against it and, if necessary, use head control to break contact.

Throat Strikes

The throat is one of the body's most vulnerable targets.

A strike to the throat can immediately affect breathing and create a chance to escape. Because of the risk of serious injury, it should be viewed as a last-resort option during a serious attack.

Headbutts

Most people don't expect them.

At close range, a headbutt can be a powerful tool when there is no room to punch. Criminals have used them for decades because they can be fast and difficult to see coming.

Biting

No one wants to talk about it, but biting has been used in life-or-death situations throughout history.

If someone is attempting to kidnap, rape, or seriously injure a victim, biting can create pain, surprise, and an opportunity to escape.

Small Joint Manipulation

Breaking or twisting fingers may sound simple, but fingers are fragile.

If someone grabs your clothing, arm, or hair, attacking the fingers may help break the grip.

Stomps

A stomp is illegal in MMA because of its destructive potential.

In self-defense, a downward stomp to a foot, ankle, or lower leg can create space to escape when trapped.

Knee Strikes

Knees are devastating at close range.

Targets include the groin, thighs, body, and legs. A well-placed knee can quickly change the direction of an encounter.

Clawing and Flesh Twisting

These techniques are ugly and not something you'll see taught in most martial arts schools.

However, they can create pain, distraction, and opportunities to escape from grabs or restraints.

What Criminals Often Do

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming attackers fight fairly.

Street predators often use:

  • Headbutts

  • Hair grabs

  • Eye attacks

  • Groin attacks

  • Multiple attackers

  • Weapons

  • Ambush tactics

  • Surprise violence

The criminal's goal is often dominance and control.

Your goal is survival and escape.

The Survive & Protect Rule

Remember this:

In self-defense, your mission is not to win.

Your mission is to survive.

If you can run, run.

If you can escape, escape.

If you can avoid the fight altogether, that's the best outcome.

But if someone is trying to seriously harm you, understanding vulnerable targets and real-world violence may give you the few seconds you need to get home safely.

Stay alert.
Stay aware.
Stay prepared.

Because the best fight is the one you never have to fight.
