What Cross Stitching Means to Me

What Cross Stitching Means to Me

Jan 11, 2023

As I sit down with my latest cross stitch project, I can't help but reflect on just how much this hobby means to me. It all started when my mum bought me my first cross stitch kit when I was around 10 years old (fabulous pic included for reference!), and it was love at first stitch. Cheesy? Yes, but true! Ever since then, it's been my go-to hobby and something I always come back to. As I've grown older, I've continued to learn and develop my own sense of what I like to stitch, which has even led to me designing my own patterns and products.

The craft has been around for centuries, with evidence of cross stitch dating back to ancient Egypt and China. It was often used to decorate clothing and household items, and was even used to create samplers that would teach young girls basic needlework skills. Cross stitch continued to be popular throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with elaborate designs featuring religious iconography and other intricate motifs.

In more recent history, cross stitch has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks in part to the internet and social media. The rise of online communities and marketplaces has made it easier than ever for people to share their work, find new patterns to try, and connect with others who share their love of the craft. There are now numerous blogs, forums, and social media accounts dedicated to cross stitch, each with their own unique style and community.

There are countless reasons why I love cross stitch so much, but I'll focus on just three of them here:

  1. It's easy to learn and doesn't cost a lot

First and foremost, cross stitch is incredibly easy to learn and doesn't cost much. Compared to other fibre arts like knitting or crochet, cross stitch is relatively simple to pick up. I'm determined to learn crochet one day, but it feels complex on first impressions. Cross stitch is literally just a case of stabbing the right holes and counting correctly (although counting when you're tired doesn't always go well, trust me!)

It's also a cheap hobby when starting from scratch, the bare minimum you need is a piece of aida, a needle and some thread. That's it! It's only when you become obsessed with stitching that it becomes a bit more expensive, then you just buy more and more thread and accessories and never stop (if you feel attacked by that, you have the same problems as me!)

  2. There are so many mental health benefits

But the benefits of cross stitch go beyond just the ease and affordability of the hobby. For me, cross stitch is a form of therapy. As an anxious person with a tendency to dwell and overthink things, it's the perfect distraction from worries. When I'm stitching, I can easily get lost in a pattern and my thoughts slow down to just focus on the present moment, especially when stitching with colours that make me happy. The repetitive motion of stitching also encourages relaxation (unless, of course, you counted wrong and the dreaded frog makes an appearance!). Stitching brings me a sense of control when other areas of my life feel overwhelming.

In terms of anxiety, stitching a project also brings a sense of control which is vital for me when I feel like I'm unable to control other areas of my life. It's also something to achieve and be good at when other tasks seem too daunting. Does stitching sometimes take priority over organising the house? Absolutely. It's self-care, right?!

Moreover, I've developed a strong sense of community by being on social media with fellow cross stitch and crafty people and connecting with my awesome customers. I feel supported, understood, and part of an amazing group. Having a little interaction on there or sending and receiving positive comments make my days feel nicer.

  3. You can stitch anything (within the guidelines of the squares)

Finally, making cross stitch patterns allows me to be creative but isn't as daunting as something like sketching or painting, when you're just staring at a blank piece of paper and could literally do ANYTHING you want. I'm not saying cross stitch is restrictive, it's not at all (just look at all the variety of patterns out there), but stitching within the squares means there is a bit more of a rule to follow. It's also much easier to be good at it, there's only one way to make a cross on aida after all!

I'm always amazed by the different genres of cross stitch designs, there's something available for everyone's preference. It certainly isn't only religious samplers and old ladies making them, which can be the stereotypical view of those not in the know. Instead, it's incredibly versatile and anything could be stitched, whether you want a portrait of your pet, a favourite quote, or even a map of your city, there are patterns or resources available to help bring your vision to life. I also love that I can add my own spin on a pattern easily just by changing the colours to suit my own favourites.

All in all, cross stitch means the world to me and I want it to always be in my life. It's a hobby that brings me joy, relaxation, and a sense of community. Whether you're a seasoned stitcher or just starting out, the craft offers endless opportunities for creativity, community, and relaxation. So the next time you pick up your needle and thread, take a moment to appreciate all the wonderful things that cross stitch has to offer.

What does cross stitch mean to you? I'd love to know your thoughts and if you agree with any of mine.
