Behind the Scenes of a One-Woman Press

Dec 25, 2022

Welcome to Sunday Mornings at the River, where we explore the magic of poetry and celebrate the voices that inspire us. As a cherished supporter on Buy Me a Coffee, we invite you to join us on this journey and gain exclusive access to behind-the-scenes glimpses into our editorial process.

Let's dive into what it takes to bring Sunday Mornings at the River to life. I'm Rebecca Rijsdijk, the founder and editor-in-chief of this endeavour. After working with volunteers in the past, I felt it was unfair to ask them to contribute their time and effort without compensation. As a result, I made the decision to continue this beautiful endeavour on my own.

At Sunday Mornings at the River, we rely on the incredible submissions from poets worldwide. During our open submission period for the quarterly anthology, we are inundated with hundreds of poems from poets at various stages of their careers. It is my responsibility to meticulously read each submission, searching for poems that resonate with me and reflect the diverse tapestry of voices within the poetry community.

Once the submission period concludes, I embark on the arduous task of sifting through the wealth of exceptional poems, carefully selecting the ones that truly speak to me. It is a process that demands deep concentration, as I am committed to finding and elevating the voices that possess an ineffable quality.

With the chosen poems in hand, I delve into the design phase, crafting the cover and interior files for our anthology. This step is of paramount importance, as I strive to create a visually striking publication that honors the essence of the poets' work.

As the anthology takes shape and becomes a tangible entity, my focus shifts to promoting the issue and the remarkable poets featured within its pages. This involves organizing online events, reaching out to media outlets, and collaborating with other organizations and presses that share our passion for poetry.

We wanted to offer you this glimpse into our creative process as a token of our appreciation for your support. Your belief in the power of poetry fuels our mission, and we are profoundly grateful for your presence in the Sunday Mornings at the River community.

Thank you for joining us on this poetic odyssey. As we continue to unveil new poetry and unearth the voices that stir our souls, we are excited to share more of our journey with you in the days to come.

Warm regards,

Rebecca Rijsdijk Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Sunday Mornings at the River
