Behind the Scenes of a One-Woman Press

Behind the Scenes of a One-Woman Press

Dec 25, 2022

Welcome to Sunday Mornings at the River—where poetry finds a home beyond the constraints of traditional publishing.

This press is a labor of love, run entirely by me, Rebecca Rijsdijk. After working with volunteers in the past, I realized I couldn’t ask people to work for free in a world that undervalues poetry. So, I took it on myself—reading every submission, designing every book, and ensuring poets get the recognition they deserve.

During our open submission periods, I receive hundreds of poems from writers at all stages of their careers. Each one is read with care, searching for those that resonate on a deeper level—poems that shake something loose, that demand to be heard. Selecting them isn’t just about curation; it’s about amplifying voices that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Once the selection is complete, the work shifts to design—crafting a book that reflects the power of the words inside. Then comes promotion: getting these poems into the hands of readers, organizing online events, and reaching out to those who believe, like I do, that poetry should be celebrated, not sidelined.

If you support this press through Buy Me a Coffee, you’re not just funding a project—you’re ensuring that independent poetry has a space to thrive. Your support allows me to keep doing this work, championing poets and publishing books that exist outside the mainstream.

Thank you for being part of this. Your belief in the power of poetry makes this possible, and I’m excited to share more of the journey with you.

Warm regards,

Rebecca Rijsdijk
