The Enchanting World Of Hinirang

The Enchanting World Of Hinirang

Mar 19, 2021

I grew up hearing stories of the old times. Not just stories but strange, sometimes frightening but most of the time magical stories. My father was born in 1944, in a faraway town in the province of Davao. My mother was born in 1957 during the time Pampanga was not as urbanized as today. They too grew up listening to stories told by their parents and grandparents. And then they had personal experiences of their own so bizarre not everyone would believe it actually happened.

Those stories they accumulated throughout their lives were then passed down to me when I was growing up. Later on I realized that this was how our country’s myths, legends and folktales were retained after thousands and thousands of years; By passing it down to younger generations, an inheritance more expensive than gold.

Unfortunately in school only a very few stories were taught to students. Not even one percent of the rich and diverse world of Philippine Mythology and Folklores were tackled. When I was young it frustrated me how I wanted to learn more but cannot find the right references. Now that I am an adult and writing for a living, I was able to slowly collect books, read and immerse myself to this interest of mine for as long as I want.

But I don’t want to stop here. Just like what my parents did, I want to share these stories too. Back in 2013 I had this idea for an urban fantasy story with Philippine Mythology as a foundation. 2015 when I started writing it and it took me two years to finally finish the book. It was 2017 when Moon Bride was published. As I delve deeper into the world of mythology my ideas keep on branching out until I gave birth to Spiral Gang series. And I know as I keep on obsessing about the enchanting stories passed down by our forefathers I will continue to write more.

This blog is going to be the home of my own universe. I will share all my discoveries as I do research for the stories I wrote and will write in the future. I want you all to fall in love with Philippine Mythology too. But most importantly, I want you to believe again. When we were children we believed in the supernatural. We believed in magic. I want to help you relive that magic again.
