It's So Pretty...New Flash Fiction Collection

I didn’t mean for it to be a thing, but it became a thing. An Experiment in Flash Fiction – Vol. 2 is a continuing collection of all my flash fiction works, thus far. Sometimes twisted, sometimes heartfelt, always a good time regardless of length.

One Moment

His ears rang into a buzzing silence, his heart pounding violently against his chest. In a state of adrenaline fueled panic desperately trying to process what was occurring. As the blood began to soak through his clothing, and the pain seared to the surface. A voice echoed in his head. ‘This is not the end.’ A deep sense of calm washed over him as he lost consciousness.

Sleep

The full moon was obscured by passing clouds, the blustery winds had died down, the air now held a distinct crispness. Jim heated the knife over the camp fire to a glowing red, took a deep breath and held it to the open gash along his side. Holding in a scream of searing pain as he cauterized the seeping wound. He exhaled, covering the wound to the best of his ability, wrapped his jacket tightly around himself and sat in front of the fire listening to the wolves howling in the distance allowing sleep to over take him.

Lost Myself

My thoughts wander to unexpected places, searching for…I don’t know peace, clarity, silence. Listening to the noise of everyday life, the unruly chaos that leaves me emotionally drained and physically tired.

Where is the silence?

The calm?

The peace?

Or at least some peace of mind.

Filling my days with mindless tasks and unrealistic daydreams to fill the void.

Why is there a void?

There shouldn’t be.

I should be content with my work, life, friends, and family.

Instead I’m in a mood, a feeling of wanting something…but nothing sounds good, tastes good or is satisfying. Trying to fill the void with music, movies, books…none of which are doing much.

I feel as if I’ve lost myself.

I wonder where I’ve gone.

(probably shouldn’t be this open)

Questioning

Amber sat in her car as the rain drops splattered on her windshield, her phone in hand, the last text message from him open, glaring at her.

Had she said or done something…

She was now questioning all the interactions she had had with him while working in the same building for the last four months.

She was friendly, charismatic, and helpful…

Did she lead him on in some way that she was unaware of?

Was there some mixed signal that she was unaware of?

Amber showed up to do her job, sometimes she was chatty with her coworkers, maybe a bit sarcastic depending on the topic of discussion. Most days she felt that she kept to herself and carried out the tasks of the day.

Was she a flirt…

Is making eye contact and listening to someone flirting? Or just being attentive?

When Amber started he would say ‘morning’ or ‘hi’ in passing, sometimes she needed to ask him a question about work.

There wasn’t to her recognition any extra banter or ‘flirting’.

Perhaps his perception of their interactions differed from hers.

Amber shook her head, put her phone away, turned the key, flipped on the windshield wipers and drove home.
