'Wimbledon champion' Vondrowsova enters third round of US Open tennis

Sep 02, 2023

Reigning Wimbledon champion Margretta Wozniacki (No. 9-Czech Republic) has reached the third round of the US Open ($65 million-$85.76 billion in prize money), the final major tennis tournament of the year.

Bondrowsova defeated Martina Trevisan (58th-ranked Italy) 2-0 (6-2 6-2) in the women's singles second round on the fourth day of competition in New York City on August 31.

Bondrowsova, who won her first major singles title at Wimbledon this year, will look to make it two in a row.

Her next opponent will be 20th-ranked Ekaterina Alexandrova (RUS), who defeated 2021 event runner-up Leila Fernandez (67th-Canada) and 2018 event quarterfinalist Lesya Churenko (46th-Ukraine).

Bondrowsova leads the all-time head-to-head with Alexandrova 3-1.

'Mommy player' Elina Svitolina (26th, Ukraine), who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, also reached the third round with a 2-1 (5-7 6-4 6-4) upset win over Anastasiya Pavlyuchenkova (89th, Russia).

Svitolina is a second-year mom, married to men's tennis player Gael Monfis (FRA), who gave birth to a daughter last October.

Since returning to the court in April, Svitolina has been showing off her "mommy power" with a string of strong performances, including the quarterfinals of the French Open and the fourth round of Wimbledon.

In the men's singles, the powerhouses have also been cruising.

Jannik Cinnere (6th-ranked Italy), who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, defeated Lorenzo Sognego (39th-ranked Italy) 3-0 (6-4 6-2 6-4) in the second round.

Sinnere will face 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka (49th-Switzerland) in the round of 16.

Alexander Tsverev (12th-Germany), the runner-up at the 2020 event, reached the third round with a 3-1 (7-6<7-1> 3-6 6-4 6-3) win over Daniel Altmaier (53rd-Germany).

The 38-year-old John Isner (157th-ranked USA), who announced his retirement after this tournament, said goodbye to the court with a 2-3 (6-3 6-4 6-7<3-7> 4-6 6-7<7-10>) upset loss to Michael Mo (89th-ranked USA).

Isner, a man for the ages with a powerful serve that radiated from his 6-foot-4 frame, was a fixture of American men's tennis in the 2010s.

He won 16 singles titles at the ATP Tour level and eight doubles titles.

He is the all-time leader in this category with 14,470 service aces.

Isner is particularly famous for playing the longest match in tennis history. In 2010, he battled Nicolas Maye (FRA) for 11 hours and five minutes in the first round of Wimbledon singles.

"I didn't win all my matches, but I love this great atmosphere and I've been playing hard," Isner said, adding, "It's hard to leave." 토토사이트
