Annie (Maniac on Netflix)

Annie (Maniac on Netflix)

Today's recommendation, in case you haven't already seen it, is Netflix's Maniac miniseries, which I think has been too long overlooked and underrated.

All info here: https://www.netflix.com/ro-en/title/80124522

I am actually not big on distopian futuristic sci-fi stuff, so it was a surprise for me to even think about binging this one, but the dealbreaker was that it was directed by Cary Fukunaga who had previously done the first season of True Detective (aka the best ever series forever final end of story full stop period) and then Emma Stone was also cast so... I said I can give it a go. It's called MINIseries, ok?

And I did love it. It was weird and at the same time freakishly accurate in terms of predictions or narrative possibilities of the not-so-far-future of the Western society, especially during these pandemic years. I even tried to re-watch it this year, and got through 2 or 3 episodes, but I couldn't finish it. Not because it distilled poorly, it still remains as good and cruelly calculated and satirical as I remembered, it just is, as of right now, too possible of an adaptation to reality post bleah-vid.

It had the sort of psycho-social experiment, gloomy but neon, numb, robotic-integrated, far from nature kind of atmosphere to a point where I was having flashbacks and thinking: is reality based on this piece of fiction or vice versa?

And because I loathe spoilers and people who narrate movies, I will not give away anything. Much.

But I have to say why I fell in love with with Annie. It was very weird to encounter this tormented, deeply traumatised addict, and to some degree, I think I sort of related to her. The depression and her distancing herself from people as a defense mechanism and hiding huge pain, her living dead numbness that translated in her careless look and lifestyle, the incapacity to express actual sentiments towards her closest, only managing to spew poison.... This layered acting sky-rocketed my respect for Emma Stone, because she was definitely not lovable, cutesy and bubbly.

So here's some character art based on that tormented person. Sort of like the outcome. Which I don't usually. The costume design was very on point, so I didn't feel the need to change anything, even though I don't get the blonde in yellow combo, it seemed fit for here.
