Getting your body ready to do what it is supposed to in order to conceive and carry a pregnancy to full term is no small feat.  From having the right hormone levels, to being a decent body weight, to whether a woman has an STD can affect her fertility. The human body is magnificent and capable of creating life even in the least favorable of conditions and even while sick and/or injured. However, those are exceptions that are outside of the norm. Also, in some cases, if pregnancy is achieved, the child could have serious health problems and/or birth defects that could be life threatening. All things considered, it would be in your best interest to invest in your health by managing any and all health issues before pregnancy.

It is important to safely manage any cormorbitites under the care of a physician. If you suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, nicotine dependency, overeating, high body weight, dental issues, and etc, seek professional help to so that you can receive treatment. Most of the aforementioned health conditions can be managed and/or controlled with medications.

The same is true with any vices that we may have that put of health and safety in danger. The abuse of drugs, alcohol, prescription pills, risky behaviors, and etc can put plans for pregnancy in a volatile situation. It is best to have these issues managed before trying to conceive.

In full disclosure, I struggle with binge eating. Believe you me, my weight and dental health has certainly paid the price for it. Thankfully, I have been able to get on a healthy eating plan and I have lost 97 lbs. I admit that there are times when I eat more chocolate or food, in general, than I should, but I am able to control it and move on with feeling guilty and continuing the cycle of overeating.

If you need the help of a professional counselor, please seek professional help. Many therapists bill insurance and offer fees on a sliding scale. Also, many community groups and faith based organizations offer group counseling sessions free of charge. It’s worth it to do your research and see what options are available to you.

So, bottom line, seek help. You are definitely worth it. All of us struggle with something, but it can be managed with the proper medical intervention.
