Nancy says thank you.

Nancy says thank you.

Jul 18, 2026

Dear coffee friends.

As we sat on the sofa the other morning, Nancy expressed her thanks for you and for the coffee we drink every morning.

Since I last wrote to you, I started taking morning walks again, kind of like the morning runs I used to take (only shorter and slower). Each day I walk, I take a picture of my coffee mug and share it on Instagram and Facebook. For me, it’s a way to be accountable, to get the extra nudge I need to go out.

And it’s a reminder that a coffee cup has been a thing for me at least since I started college teaching in the mid-1980s. I’m grateful for digital photography; I wouldn’t have space for all the prints of coffee cup photographs.

Your support is that kind of a nudge for me, too. Not in the sense of an obligation. More in the sense that knowing people are investing in and invested in helping me put words and thoughts together helps me stay on task.

As you may have noticed, I’m trying to write original work again at 300wordsaday.com, and even am starting to write new prayers for Sundays. I’ve been unapologetic about reusing Sunday prayers for the last few years. The prayers I wrote in and for the hospital were polished and appropriate. But I’m not in that world anymore and can think about talking with God in my—in our—current world.

I am, however, holding loosely to the publishing schedule for 300 and for Finding Words in Hard Times. It's possible that silence may be better than babbling or than forced phrases. I cannot give others permission to breath if I don't take my own counsel.

Thanks again.

Jon
