OSINT, Step by Step
Open-source investigation through real cases
How do I test a claim? Which record can I trust? What does the document in front of me show, and what does it not show? This book works through open-source investigation with those questions, using the records of real cases.
The 640-page English PDF has 18 method chapters and 9 real cases followed through public records. In the method chapters you narrow a question, read archive copies with their dates, compare a photo's EXIF time with its caption, read domain, DNS, certificate and email records, check a large file against a small sample and turn what you found into a short report, step by step.
The real cases include whether the queue of waiting ships cleared when the Suez Canal reopened in 2021, dating the 2018 collapse of the Kīlauea summit with USGS camera frames, what the red cells on the 2020 Beirut damage map show, three dates in the records of the domain that stopped WannaCry, and the name on the floppy disk that reached a TV station in the BTK investigation in Wichita.
Every chapter writes out the sentences the records support and the ones they do not. The "From a real screen" pages at the end of each chapter rest on screenshots taken and responses saved on 8 October 2026. Most of the original screenshots of the field tasks, taken on 27 September 2026, are lost, and the book says so. For those 45 tasks I added re-check records dated 23 October 2026; under each task I note the steps I ran, the alternative tools I used and the checks I could not complete. At the back are an appendix on public records and the law in Türkiye, the answer key, a glossary and the full source list.
The book is written for people new to open-source investigation, people who verify news and claims, people in security teams who read records, and anyone studying the topics of the GIAC GOSI exam. It is not a GIAC or SANS publication, it contains no exam questions and it does not promise a pass.
