How to stay motivated to practice flute

Aug 17, 2026

You love flute and you want to get good. But after the initial excitement of learning something new wears off, you feel a sudden drop in motivation to play. The good news is you can be proactive in keeping the momentum going. Here are some of my best tips for generating new sources of motivation to practice flute:

imageSet concrete goals for yourself

“I really want to be able to play this piece that I love”

And then break them into actionable steps

“In order to play this piece, I need to learn x y and z techniques”

Doing your exercises feels much more purposeful when it’s in service of a piece you want to be able to play. And you’ll get a sense of satisfaction from every mini goal you accomplish along the way!

Immerse yourself in the world of flute music

Listen to some flute music and let your algorithm show you new pieces — or even better — go to concerts in your area! I’ve discovered so many of my favorite pieces by accident and it always inspired me to work towards new goals!

Join flute and music communities!

Start by checking out events run by your local flute club or masterclasses at local music schools. If you can’t find anything near you, there are also online communities like the Flute Forum Facebook group.

Once you know people who love flute as much as you do, you’ll get their recommendations for cool flute pieces to discover and events/programs to join!

Work with a teacher!

Nothing will keep the motivation flowing as much as a professional that can guide you with the bigger picture in mind and connect you with the right opportunities. I help my students define their goals, break them down into actionable steps, and stay accountable for reaching them.
