New work in group show at Gallery 44 (Toronto)

May 04, 2024

NEW WORK - I'm so excited to share the first frames from a new project I've been developing called "Drinking Alone." This project is up at GALLERY 44 as part of a group show "What Matters?" from May 4 - July 7 and is being exhibited as part of the CONTACT Photography Festival.

Image Description: Christopher often drinks alone in their apartment. For them, drinking alone creates space for solitude and personal reflection as they look out to the bustling street below. Next, they experience a sense of release as serotonin eases feelings of stress and anxiety. Finally, feelings of shame linger as they are left with the physical and social impacts of their alcohol use. The social stigma of alcohol use is one of the reasons Christopher chooses to drink alone.

Project Description: "Drinking Alone" is a collaborative project using black and white film photography, text, and illustrations created by photographer and participants to explore the topics of mental health, alcohol use, and intergenerational trauma.

Group Show Description: What Matters? unites the artistic voices of Gallery 44 (Ontario) and Silverfish Photography Collective (New Brunswick) in a joint exploration of the contemporary landscape and our collective sense of uncertainty. Amidst today’s diverse challenges, we may find our sense of hope eclipsed by our own intrinsic instincts to survive and persevere. Yet, within this turbulence, this work resonates with a personal and pivotal narrative – a reclamation and re-illumination of what it is that we value and care about. In times of upheaval and unrest, there’s no better moment to reflect, rediscover, and reaffirm what matters most to us.
