I truly think the FT-4X is a greatly underrated and overlooked option for an inexpensive hand held. In the above video I discuss my five favorite features of Yaesu's entry level H/T.
Easy to navigate menu system
Good ergonomics
Rugged construction
Same connectors for antenna and accessories as a Baofeng
Equipped with Yaesu's ARTS
All at a reasonable price for a quality H/T.
For me it's about the ideal H/T for someone new to the hobby, or for someone that wants to stock up on reasonable prices handhelds to keep in vehicles, packs, kits, etc. It's compact size makes it a great candidate for an EDC radio.
I keep one attached to my laptop pack for work and one in my Jeep at pretty much all times. While not a cheap as a 'Feng. It is still at a great price for how much radio you're getting. For me, it's right where an "entry level" H/T should be.
It's at a price that is not prohibited for someone who's "ham curious" to purchase. It is simple to use. It has some very nice features.
There are a few missing features I wish it had that would make the FT-4X closer to ideal. Such as a DC charging port, and an A & B band display. But for the price, I shouldn't complain.
I recommend the FT-4X to anyone looking for an inexpensive H/T over a 'Feng any day of the week.
