Range Test 2: Two T-Beams and a RAK on a post
So similar to my previous test, this time adding a node to form my first mesh. I picked up my second Liygo T-Beam. So for this test I placed the RAK node that I have near the area I was able to get my farthest contact during the first test.
Since the RAK is in a 3D printed enclosure, it made the best choice to be placed on the telescoping mast mast at the center point of my range test. Like the test before, I left one T-Beam on the console in my truck cab. The RAK was raised about 22 or 23 feet into the air.
With the other T-Beam with me, I hiked further along the trail. The results were pretty pleasing to me. 1.26 miles per a rough sketch on Google Earth. The terrain is woods and with rolling hills.
I am really seeing some potential that bring Meshtastic devices with on group outings, like camping trips into remote areas or things like sporting events where cell towers can get overloaded.
Not Scientific Range Test Playlist
Here is a collection of range tests I have done with my different Meshtastic nodes. While not scientific by any means, I try to be somewhat logical with and consistent with the testing that I do.
Most of the tests have, and will, take place in a state forest along the St. Croix River just down the from my home. The main location is a loop of cross country ski trails that are open for hiking when there is not enough snow on the ground for skiing.
This makes a great testing ground for me. Besides the convenient location, the trail loops and varying terrain gives me lots of options with distance and terrain for the testing.
I do node to node testing for range, and using multiple nodes to create a mesh network. I plan to take out new nodes and devices when I get them, along with antennas and other items that factor into making a mesh network.
