Breaking Chains, Building Strength: My Fight Against Domestic Violence

Dec 07, 2023

Let's dive into the mosaic of my life—a journey marked by resilience, liberation, and an unyielding quest for freedom. So, who exactly is Sarah?

At 35, I'm a single mom to two incredible girls and 1 absolutely adventurous boy , and our path has been a rollercoaster. But the story doesn't kick off there; let's rewind the tape.

The Early Years

Born Audrey Rose Richerson, my childhood wasn't typical. Sesame Street's Big Bird, quirky piggy banks, and a giant Wile E. Coyote stuffed animal were staples. Trolls with cute bellies and rainbow hair ruled my room, and my early memories include the comfort of a foster home friend.

The Adoption Adventure

Life pivoted when a couple, already parents to my brothers, adopted my sister and me. The courtroom experience was intimidating, but with my adoptive mother by my side, the transition was a bit smoother. Yet, the nagging question persisted: "Who am I now?"

Finding Silver Linings

An angry kid in search of identity, I grappled with not having answers about my origins. Writing became my outlet, transforming pain into something meaningful. Life wasn't all gloom; it had moments of despair and breathtaking beauty.

At 18, my biological father entered the scene, offering fresh insights into my identity. Meeting him was surreal, revealing surprising connections with siblings.

School Days and Discoveries

School brought its share of challenges, especially in math, but language arts and history were my forte. A Holocaust class left a deep impact, kindling a desire to help those in need. Amidst a limited circle of friends, my foster home bestie remained a constant support.

Life's Hard Knocks

At 18, life threw me a curveball—a toxic relationship. The birth of my first daughter marked a turning point. Despite challenges, motherhood became a source of strength.

Navigating the Storm

The journey turned tumultuous with allegations, battles with CPS, and attempts to escape the abusive relationship. Despite setbacks, I persevered. My daughter temporarily stayed with my biological mom, ensuring her safety while I plotted my escape.

Breaking Free

Escaping proved challenging; threats and manipulation ensued. However, with the help of family and CPS, I eventually broke free—a testament to my strength and resilience.

Reclaiming My Narrative

Reclaiming my life meant facing legal battles, but I stood strong. The courtroom became a platform where I testified against my abuser—a moment of empowerment and pride. Though he still tries to reach out, I've learned to block out the negativity.

Welcoming New Beginnings

In 2015, I welcomed my second daughter, then in 2022 I welcomed my little boy , navigating the challenges of single motherhood with unwavering determination.

The Present - A Life Unbound

Today, I have learned that my walk alone is one to be treasures as I learn myself how to heal. My passion for helping others propels me forward, and my children are my greatest accomplishments. Discovering that both girls are autistic has added a new layer to our journey, but they face it with resilience.

Despite the struggles, I've emerged free and true to myself. The journey ahead is promising, and I'm ready to embrace it.
